We are back at it! I apologize for taking some time away from blogging, but other endeavors needed my attention. I promise not to leave you hanging again. Here is Example #2 of Conscious Capital businesses. Directly following this post will be a post entirely dedicated to helping you find your purpose, define your core values, and where to find resources to help with those discoveries.
Example #2: First United Bank
First United Bank is definitely doing something right. They have 85 locations across Texas and Oklahoma, with an annual profit of about $7 billion. Yes, that’s Billion with a B! They are also a partner of the Conscious Capitalism Inc. which is a pretty big deal. Here’s what they have to say about their efforts.
Purpose:
To inspire and empower others to spend life wisely
Core Values:
First United Bank has done a fantastic job of defining their core values, as well as the pillars they adhere to. In their case, these two are not the same, though they do have some of the same themes. Let’s look first at their core values. Notice at the end they have defined their stakeholders are part of those values. What a great way to include that information where it is most likely to been seen and reinforced to everyone in the company. Here’s what they have to say, directly from their website.
- Know What’s Right- We put God first, our families second, and our jobs third. We know we have unshakable faith. We cherish family. Our own, our bank family and the family of others. We know family is our foundation.
- Living What’s Right- We hold each other to high standards; our actions speak louder than words. We live with integrity. We are life-long learners who combine our individual talents to achieve high performance. We work as a team, learning and succeeding together.
- Sharing What’s Right- We meet others where they are and help them get where they want to be. We share lifelong relationships. We make a difference in the lives of others. We share our time and our hearts with our communities.
- We Do What’s Right- For our Customers, our Employees, our Shareholders, our Partners and Suppliers, and our Communities.
Since First United Bank defines its Pillars differently than Core Values, let’s take a quick look at them.
Pillars:
Faith- According to their website, First United Bank places a premium on faith in God and the importance of a meaningful life. To them, a meaningful life is defined as one that is spent serving others.
Financial Well Being- by focusing on earning and saving, financial well-being becomes financial security. Confidence to support community, family, and ourselves follows.
Health and Wellness- Eating well, exercising, and reducing stress are important to spending life wisely. Wellness of mind and body are crucial to this mission
Personal Growth-to spend life wisely, you must have a calling, not just a career or job. Your calling should include learning, growing, and finding ways to better your community.
Culture:
So what are they doing to create a great environment based on these goals? A lot! Their website, http://www.spendlifewisely.com/, is the resource you never knew you needed! It provides great free information about financial planning, volunteerism, and highlights of different service projects their employees have embarked on. They clearly have built a culture of living well in their communities!
